Searching for the bank in the Haidian "district"
Before leaving France, I've chosen a specific bank in the district of Haidian, thinking it will be not so far from the uni and practical. The address that was written on the website was Danling street 丹棱街, Haidian.
I did not had the idea of searching on the Google maps, and just asked the girl of the youth hostel: we have a vague idea of where it is. Then we search it on the touristic map of Beijing. The guy from the youth hostel circle a zone on the map and tell me to go ask there. On this map, it seemed not so far, just at the end of the street, then turn to the left and continue straight to the South...
Comment qu'on traverse ici?
Comment on traverse là ?
How do we cross the roads here?
So I finally went out: ouahh! What is this big crossroad ! By night, there were no people, so it was not so impressive, and I was just thinking about finding the hotel, so it was a bit shocking this time. It's soo huge ! I had to first go to the "Lotus Centre" to make some ID pictures, it's just at the opposite, so how do we cross the road now ? People are just staying in the middle of the zebra crossing, some cars turning to the right just don't slow down at all in front of the pedestrians...O_O
We'll understand later that pedestrian doesn't have the priority against any other "means of transport", the priority is for the one who turns to the right, and not, like in France, for the one who arrives from the right for example...
After the ID pics, I go straight to the end of the "street", which you can rather call a road. It is Chengfu Road, or Chengfulu 成府路. I've already walked 1 km (calculated on Google maps), when I turned on my left (to the South), and see even more ways for cars (4 each side of the road), and a very looong biiig rooad to continue in the mist. How am I going to find this bank in this fu***** Haidian district ! I only see lots of university buildings (huge and imposing).
Nice guy helping
With my paper on which I wrote the name and address of the bank, I asked my way in the street. The people didn't understand, plus it must have been strange to see a Chinese girl not talking Chinese so good (freshly arrived banana). They somehow suggested to me to continue to the South. Then, I entered in a local "France télécom" shop, which is China mobile 中國移動 here, and asked my way to the salesmen/women. They were at least 5, and all wanted to sell me a mobile phone. But when I asked them about the way, no one was here anymore ! Hopefully, one of the customer saw me and I think felt some pity for me, so he helped me to ask the post office (China post) next door. Hopefully for them, they knew the street (just one woman in fact), and told me to find a "Carrefour" supermarket, the Carrefour from France ! I thank the guy and the woman and continue desperately to the South.
I know... I don't know
Passing beside a subway station and another hundred meters further, I see the Carrefour 家乐福 -you enter in it as a subway, so the hypermarket is not like in our countries, with lots of parking lots around, but very well integrated in the city centre. I'm almost there !
I see a guy that seems to take care about the transportation. As we are in winter, he's dressed with a big Chinese kaki-color coat, with brown fur, as you can see in some movies/series about war in China. He should know the streets around here...He suddenly had a kind of awkward expression on his face, pretended at first to know and showed me a random direction...to finally say “no, no I don't know"...Chinese people and "I don't want to lose face" behaviour...I'm losing my head in the commercial malls of the "Carrefour" surroundings, in which you can find brands as H&M, Levi's, Esprit, Armani...
j'ai fait ça à pied...3 km dans l'inconnu!
Retrouvailles
Retrouvailles
When I arrived at the youth hostel, I heard some people talking French: yeaah that was Rieul and Emilie ! Later, we met Zhor, Charline and Flora, and Jérôme ! I missed you all ! oops, Claire who visited Japan with me has not arrived yet, although we were supposed to leave on the same day (but not on the same plane). Jérôme has already found an appartment, so we visited it. Our first lunch of the day, and my first lunch in China, would be a kind of Chinese fast-food (serves Chinese dishes, but besides you still have Macdonald's or KFC), because we didn't know how to order yet. In the evening, we saw even more people from the program in a super good restaurant suggested by Yuan. It was very good and not expensive at all ((65 Yuans=~7 euros)!
Retrouvailles
We can see the "Wudaokou - 5th railway crossing", our 1st fast-food chinese lunch, and Chinese restaurant dinner
Conclusions du jour
Conclusions de la mission 1 du jour:
Conclusions of the day
Conclusions on misson 1 of the day:
1. Beware of Chinese maps without any scale to refer...
2. Take note of your destination in Chinese characters, and also the big roads name near the place, but avoid to show Pinyin ! (Chinese people will prefer looking at Chinese characters, rather than non-Chinese ones, it seems foreign, so they think they won't understand it), it's as if we ask you the way by showing you some Chinese characters.
3. Before going out, it's a good thing to look at the itinerary on Google maps, or Baidu maps if you have been converted to Chinese search engines.
4. Ask your way to at least 3 different chinese people to be able to judge the direction and distance before reaching your point.
